Objective This paper examines the form and content of the novel. The forms are split into two categories, prose and poetry. I will discuss what comprises these forms, for example for poetry I will discuss metre, rhyming scheme, verse structure, letter count etc.; content is defined as what theme you are writing about in your book. Introduction to an informative post on writing style in novels - prose vs poetry The form that a novel takes can vary but there are general categories that they fit into which include Prose and Poetry. I will be covering poetry in this post as this is the form that I am most familiar with. Forms of reading of prose are different to those of reading of poetry. This is due to the fact that prose tends to have more depth of content, so the reader is able to mentally connect with characters and story on a deeper level. Secondly, because there isn't an actual structure applied to poetry it can be able to be read on a whim which allows for more free thought and imagination whilst still being within an ordered structure. Considered by many critics as 'poor' written, Lolita has been described by some as a work of art which has had lasting appeal for many enthusiasts despite its controversial subject matter. The appeal of the novel is thought to be its subtle and thorough form of writing that is used by Nabokov to deliver a sense of art and nostalgia. The author's intricate and extensive use of prose and poetry (and the comparisons he makes between the two forms) all contribute to bring out the real essence in what Lolita is about. Lolita is a tale about a pervert who falls in love with a young girl called Dolores Haze, who goes by the name Lolita. The novel is written from Humbert Humbert's point of view. Aspects of the plot The plot can be broadly defined as it is in three acts with each act containing different plots within the novel. The novel starts in act 1 with Humbert having married, then ten years later in act 2 Humbert travels to America (he has never known about his wife's sanity before this point). After landing in America he meets up with Dolores, he falls in love with her and takes her back to his home. This act is called act 2 because it is when Humbert Humbert is trying to get the girl back after she had previously left him for another man. Act 3 is where Humbert has found a new 'Lolita' and they have left the previous one, making Dolores Haze seem like a memory of a past life. For the most part this novel is written in prose to cover the story of what has happened between Humbert and Lolita. The author uses different tactics to create an orderly way of telling the story. Most of the novel is made up of prose because it allows for full detail to be given so that each character can be understood themselves as well as their actions throughout the novel. eccc085e13
